Using low-concentration NaOH and freezing together induced the crystalline transformation of NC from cellulose I to II via freeze concentration. After the crystalline transformation, cross-linking between the NC and CA in the freeze concentration layer (FCL) provided a strong NC network structure, forming NC hydrogels with high mechanical strength. The freeze-cross-linked NC hydrogel easily retained powder adsorbents in its inner space by mixing the NC-NaOH sol and the powder, and the hydrogel showed high removal efficiency for heavy metals. The results highlight the versatility of chemically unmodified celluloses in developing functional materials, suggest possible practical applications.

In this paper, we introduce the fabrication and properties of carboxymethyl cellulose nanofiber (CMCF) hydrogels with high compression recoverability, macroporosity, and nontoxic properties by utilizing the phase separation phenomenon of ice crystals and solutes that occurs during freezing of aqueous solutions. The features of the developed freeze cross-linked CMCF hydrogel include that it can be made from harmless raw materials with simple procedure, high water content, and biodegradability. By taking advantage of these properties, this hydrogel synthesis technique can contribute to expanding the use of cellulose derivatives as environmental purifiers, functional materials, etc.

A High-volume Fly ash Silica fume Cement (HFSC) has been considered as the use of concrete support of drift in deep disposal of radioactive wastes. JAEA has been carried out experiments and modeling studies to evaluate chemical stability of C-A-S-H gel synthesized which would be believed as the dominant component of the HFSC. For the modeling purpose, it is necessary to evaluate the chemical composition both of C-A-S-H gel synthesized and accompanied minerals in the experiment. In the year of 2020, Al and Si NMR measurement were performed to identify Al and Si distribution in the sample and chemical composition of C-A-S-H gel was derived. However, it was impossible to derive the C-A-S-H gel composition having the expected Al/Si molar ratio since there were several accompanied minerals produced in the experiment due to the short term of immersion. This time similar approach to derive C-A-S-H gel composition is adopted using NMR measurement for the sample of longer time (6 months).

Here, we present a study of carboxymethyl cellulose nanofiber (CMCF) hydrogels formed using the solid-quasi liquid phase separation. CMCF hydrogels were formed simply by adding citric acid to frozen CMCF and thawing the mixture. It was found that rearrangement of CMCF structures via hydrogen bonding proceeds in the freeze concentration layer before the ice crystals melt. Under freeze concentration, CMCF and bound water are confined at high concentrations. The crosslinking reaction in such a unique space contributed to the formation of CMCF hydrogel with high mechanical strength. We discuss the gelation behavior and properties of freeze crosslinked CMCF hydrogels and their applications.

The results show a significant fractionation of hydrogen isotopes during dehydration. The D molar ratio of the hydrogel increases from 0.056 to 0.2 during dehydration from 90.5 wt% to 5 wt% in water content. Deuterated water preferentially forms hydrogen bonds with hydrophilic groups of the polymer in hydrogels because of the difference in strengths of hydrogen bonds between protium and deuterium. As a result, normal water preferentially evaporates in the initial stage of dehydration, leaving deuterated water in the drying hydrogel. The results suggest that hydrogels are an efficient material for isotope fractionation with evaporation.

High content fly ash silica fume cement (HFSC) has been considering a candidate low alkali cements for the geological disposal of radioactive waste in Japan. JAEA has been currently performing many experiments and modeling studies relevant to validation for the long-term stability of the C-A-S-H gel which is a dominant component of the HFSC. For developing the C-A-S-H model of hydration and degradation, it is necessary to determine the composition of C-A-S-H gel and accompanied minerals when it reacts with water. In the present subject, the synthesized sample of C-A-S-H gels were analyzed by using the NMR spectra of Al and Si to determine the coordination of these element in the C-A-S-H gel.

Gel dosimeters are gelated aqueous solutions of radiosensitive substances and useful tools to visualize three-dimensional dose distribution of radiations. A study which uses gel dosimeters to quantify the dose distribution in biological samples is explained. In this study, the measured distribution was compared with the simulation result of PHITS to check the accuracy of Monte Carlo simulation in particle therapy situations. The comparison shows that the measured complex distal edge structure of the dose distribution reflecting the particle transport in inhomogeneous biological sample was reproduced by simulation with a precision of 2 mm difference. The result also shows that gel dosimeters are powerful tools to visualize three-dimensional dose distribution and have potential to be used for various purposes such as quality assurance of treatment beams as well as accuracy check of simulations.

The decomposition of scattering intensities into partial scattering functions of each CHP nanogel component, i.e., pullulan, cholesterol, and the cross-term between the pullulan and the cholesterol allows us to investigate the internal structure of the nanogel. The effective spherical radius of the skeleton formed by pullulan chains was found to be about 8.1 nm. In the CHP nanogel, there are about 19 cross-linking points where a cross-linking point is formed by aggregation of trimer cholesterol molecules with the spatially inhomogeneous distribution of the mass fractal dimension of 2.6. The average radius of the partial chains can also be determined to be 1.7 nm. As the result, the complex structure of the nanogels is coherently revealed at the nanoscopical level.

Effects of liner energy transfer (LET) and dose rate on the optical property of polymer gel dosimeters were investigated. The dosimeter prepared by using a radiation-crosslinked hydroxypropyl cellulose gel and methacrylate monomers such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and nonaethylene glycol dimethacrylate showed the color change from colorless to white with the He, C, Fe ions irradiation. Absorbance of the irradiated dosimeters increased with the dose up to 10 Gy. The absorbance of the dosimeters at the same total dose decreased with increasing dose rate in the range of 0.1 to 6.8 Gy/min. The absorbance decreased in order of He, C, Fe ions, which was in agreement with a change of LET. The increase in LET affected the decrease in the number of polymerization initiator such as OH radical and hydrated electron, resulting in the reduction of the absorbance of the dosimeters.

Neutron diffraction profiles of low-DO-content poly-N,N,-dimethylacrylamide (PDMAA) hydrogels were measured from 100 to 300 K to investigate the structure and properties of water in hydrogels. A broad diffraction observed at temperatures lower than 220 K indicates the existence of amorphous ice in the hydrogels at low temperatures. During the heating process, diffraction peaks from ice crystals appear in the profiles. These peaks indicate that cubic ice and hexagonal ice exist at T 220 K. We refined the structure parameters of these ices in the hydrogel, which indicate the existence of low-density ice in the hydrogel.

The dosimeters exposed to Co -rays became cloudy at only 1 Gy. The irradiated dosimeters were optically analyzed by using a UV-vis spectrophotometer to evaluate dose response. Absorbance of the dosimeters linearly increased in the dose range from 0 to 10 Gy. The dose sensitivity increased with increasing 9G concentration. The dosimeter with 2 wt% HEMA, 3 wt% 9G, and 0.16 wt% THPC exhibited about 0.04 Abs Gy of the dose sensitivity. The dose sensitivity of the dosimeters was also enhanced by increment in THPC, reached about 0.06 Abs Gy at 0.40 wt% THPC.

Diffraction peaks observed below 250 K indicate the existence of ice in the hydrogels. Some diffraction peaks from the ice are at lower diffraction angles than those in ordinary hexagonal ice (Ih). These shifts in peaks indicate that the lattice constants of the and axes in the ice are about 0.29% and 0.3% higher than those in ice Ih, respectively. The results show that bulk low-density ice can exist in PDMAA hydrogels. The distortions in the lattice structure of ice imply significant interactions between water molecules and the surrounding polymer chains, which play an important role in the chemical and mechanical properties of the hydrogel.
